Eighteen-year-old scholarship student Sloane Reed lives interdependently with her cancer-stricken mother, Elaine. In the end, Sloane uses herself as bait to lure the two families into West Yard Chemical Depot, using Celeste Hale as the final “prize” to ignite a shootout and enable a police roundup. After the criminal forces are destroyed, she graduates as valedictorian and a Governor’s STEM Scholar, returning with her mother to an ordinary yet bright life.
